The Final Mile

BY: ARFA MASIHUDDIN, M.B.B.S., BATCH XX. This is going to sound crazy but I’m kind of having fun with these exams. “Final year prof”. The adrenaline rush, the cramming and cursing, WhatsApp group chats dissecting – not discussing – the answers, and crazy food cravings; there’s just a very homely feel to it. It’s like we’ve been a clan for these past five years, fighting and laughing together, united against the exams. And now suddenly we won’t be that anymore. Maybe something else, probably something better, but definitely not that. Amidst the whispers of medical jargon, there has been a … Continue reading The Final Mile

Your Friendly Neighbourhood Dentist

Back in my childhood days; I used to be a shy, dorky, ‘bhola sa’ kid. With time I gained confidence, got involved in sports; especially football, and eventually became head boy of my school. Since my Dad was in the army, I was never in the same school for long. Luckily I have been in Karachi for the past 13 years. It’s my fifth year here at Ziauddin. Alhumdulilah I’ve completed my bachelors in Dentistry and I’m currently doing my housejob here. My inspiration to join this field has always been my Taya (Uncle) who is a neuro physician and … Continue reading Your Friendly Neighbourhood Dentist

It’s Time to Say Goodbye.

BY: ARFA MASIHUDDIN, M.B.B.S., BATCH XX. It’s time to say goodbye to the sun-baked benches of Keemari that have often eavesdropped on the little moments of our lives there; rants over strict teachers, last-minute exam revisions, the hushed secrets, giggles over the phone, sad smiles, many a happy birthday. The year passed away a little too soon, I tell myself. Exhausting me, teaching me. Those dusty leaves of the faithful trees crowning those benches have sheltered many a sigh, many a smile, a little anger, a few disappointments. Shahid Bhai’s first-floor cafeteria has always welcomed us with a homely comfort … Continue reading It’s Time to Say Goodbye.

The Liberty to Grow.

I began my medical career in a government setup, transferring to Civil Hospital where I did my Diploma in ENT and my Fellowship. I had a very good teaching experience with the students at DOW. Teaching and interacting with them wasn’t easy but I feel like they too taught us a lot. With a government system requiring you to have a local domicile I realised I couldn’t progress as much as I wanted to so I resigned from the government setup in 2002 and  joined Ziauddin. I was teaching Batch number four at the time. My experience since then showed me … Continue reading The Liberty to Grow.

Valedictory Speech, Convocation’18 Ziauddin University.

BY : DR. AMSH SAIF, M.B.B.S., BATCH XVIII. Distinguished Guests, Faculty, beloved Family, Friends and finally my Fellow Graduates. Good morning and As Salaam Alaikum. Time is a slippery thing isn’t it? It passes so very slowly if you’re aware of its presence, and all too quickly if you’re unaware of it ! It seemed only Yesterday, that the emerald envelope was delivered  to us. How our trembling hands undid the seal; the frantic way we weaved through line after line of text, and the wave of relief that washed over us as the word ‘accepted’ came into focus. I’m … Continue reading Valedictory Speech, Convocation’18 Ziauddin University.

Finding flaws is very easy

2. I want to develop ownership in the students, that they belong to Ziauddin University and that this university is theirs for their lifetime. As students from other universities keep it with them and feel proud to be an alumnus of a university, I want to develop this feeling in the students here too, because I haven’t seen it in many alumni. This place is very good, it is far better than other places, and I know that there are many loopholes and issues but the students should come together to try to fix the problems, instead of just pointing … Continue reading Finding flaws is very easy
